These organs were mechanical, being programmed through long sequences of punched cards. A typical organ had about 100 "keys" (mostly notes, but also things like drums, triangles, and even moving figures) and these were represented by 100 positions across the width of the cards. As the cards moved through the reader, holes triggered the appropriate action (usually via a pneumatic mechanism). Plenty of music to choose from. The man in charge, sat in front of an old-fashioned electric controller. Another look at the cards going through the player. The central motor is hidden inside a model traction engine. The front of the organ whizzes past at speed. The entrance. See, it's a Scenic Railway! A (not very good) view of the controller.

The top is blown, after which the stem is formed by continually rotating the hot glass while pushing it outwards. First some grooves were made in the stem and then it was coated with a second layer of glass. The air trapped in the grooves expands to form thin strips within the stem, and the rotation means that these stems spiral around each other. Next we see a simple paperweight. Small holes are jabbed into the blob of glass and then sealed over. Again, the air inside expands to produce large voids. Heating the glass a bit more ready to blow it. A general view of the glassworks showing finished ornaments. The molten glass is placed in a carbon mould and air blown in. Working the shape a bit. Forming the stem. The pad used here is just several layers of wet newspaper. Now widening out the base ... ... and shaping it. The finished candlestick. These small holes will expand to form bubbles. On this rainy day in July it would seem that the youngster preferred the shelter of the fucshia pot to looking for food. The hedge at the front corner of our property. These new potentillas replaced ones that died over the winter. A neighbour gave us this variegated plant that sits under the hedge. This orange blossom at one corner of the house has grown to quite a size. A variety of colours along one side border of the back garden ... ... and looking the other way, towards the beans.
